Thompson Duke’s vaporizer device filling machines receive CE certification for the European market

PORTLAND, Ore. United States, 2023-Feb-15 — /EPR  INDUSTRIAL NEWS/ — Thompson Duke Industrial, the leader in cannabis oil vaporizer device filling and capping equipment, announced it has achieved CE certification for its cannabis vape cartridge filling equipment in Europe, including its IZR and MCF line of machines.

“As the cannabis industry continues to evolve on a global scale, we are seeing a critical need for more efficient manufacturing processes around the world,” stated Vlad Valme from Thompson Duke Industrial. â€œIn order to meet this need, specifically across the European market, our team decided to pursue CE certification. Securing this certification validates our machinery, and our compliance with widely accepted product safety standards. It allows us to provide clients in the EU a competitive advantage as the cannabis market grows exponentially in the region.”

CE certification is a mandatory requirement governing multiple types of products, set in place and regulated by the European Union. Earning this certification allows Thompson Duke Industrial to freely sell and export machinery throughout the European marketplace.

In order to earn CE certification, manufacturers must have products that meet the regulatory requirements of the European Commission’s health, safety and environmental standards. In addition, manufacturers that sell electrical or electronic products must also be in accordance with the Waste Electrical and Electronic Equipment Directive (WEEE) and the Restriction of Hazardous Substances Directive (RoHS) guidelines. Thompson Duke’s equipment underwent rigorous independent testing to ensure conformity with all relevant EU-wide requirements in order to earn the CE Marking.

The new certification applies to Thompson Duke’s vaporizer device filling machines, which are already GMP-ready and cETLus/CSA Certified and utilize Festo automation and pneumatic industrial-grade components from Germany.

● IZRC automatic filling machine: designed specifically to streamline large-scale, industrial cartridge filling and capping operations using precisely controlled automation to fill cartridges, pods, capsules, syringes and jars directly in manufacturer packaging.

● MCF2C semi-automatic filling machine: now with integrated temperature control, this machine is designed to fill almost any oil vaporizer device available on the market using a lightweight and portable benchtop design for quick and easy setup, operation and cleaning.

Thompson Duke’s CE Certification is the latest in a number of certifications for the company, which also holds cETLus and CSA certifications for its machines. In addition, the company adheres to Good Manufacturing Practice (GMP) guidelines and all its equipment is GMP-ready. Looking ahead, the company plans to earn additional certifications to further expand the accessibility of its machinery around the world.

Why Australia Needs to Invest in Future Skills for a Thriving Economy

St. Joseph, Michigan, USA, 2022-Jun-17 — /EPR INDUSTRIAL NEWS/ — As our world becomes ever more technologically advanced, so the requirements for skills are undergoing a dramatic shift. While there has historically been a fear within workforces that computers and robotics will reduce the need for humans to carry out tasks, the opposite is proving to be the case.

Instead, automation is removing the need for humans to carry out tasks that are repetitive and boring, and replacing this with an increasing level of non-routine cognitive tasks. Rather than reducing the number of jobs on offer, tech is causing a shift that requires very different skills from workers.

With this comes a challenge for future investment into the skills that will be in demand in the upcoming years and decades.

The Skills that are Driving Economic Growth

Since before the Industrial Revolution it’s fallen to humans to carry out multiple repetitive tasks that have driven economic growth. Although machines have now taken over much of this element, this has created many other higher order and digital openings that demand an increased level of human expertise in order for an economy to advance. The issue with this is that it’s leading to a shortage of those adept to fill the roles – something that needs to be addressed now if we’re to avoid a dramatic skills shortage in the near and medium-term future.

The so-called STEM skills of science, technology, engineering and mathematics underpin what’s needed to drive the circle of elements that are needed for the future. This circle is made up of the following:

  • Future skills
  • Innovation
  • Thriving economy
  • Jobs
  • Solving social, environmental and economic challenges.

These 5 linked elements are crucial for future economic growth, the well-being of the population and addressing environmental issues, such as disease, food and water supplies alongside climate change.

STEM skills aren’t solely limited to the disciplines mentioned above. Instead, a cross disciplinary aspect is what will be needed to solve many of the quandaries that face future generations. Education is key to developing the critical thinking and capabilities that will arm today’s children and young adults with the skills to solve many of today’s environmental issues as well as ensuring that Australia remains a player on the global stage.

Future predictions say that by 2030 it’s expected that the amount of time workers spend solving problems will double, with more than 77% of their time using mathematical and scientific skills.

STEM Education will Drive the Future Workforce

The shift that’s come from technological change means that going forward virtually everyone is going to need at least a basic level of STEM skills. This will, of course, be spearheaded during mandatory education for those of school age, but also through upskilling of those already in employment.

While this will represent significant cost – it’s been estimated at around $600 billion from 2015 to 2030 – it’s also bringing about economic gain. While this might not be as much as the cost of education in the short term, in the medium to long term this on-going expenditure is essential for a future thriving Australian economy.

Manufacturing and engineering are two examples that are representative of current investment at both local and national scale. Australia’s once world-leading manufacturing industry was allowed to reduce to a mere shadow of its glory days. Thankfully, and with substantial government investment, this is beginning to be turned around.

This, along with strategic education of the current and future workforce, is exactly what’s needed to ensure that our country once again becomes a force to be reckoned with.

Precision engineering and CNC machining providers, SixDe, are at the forefront of this new way of working. Not only has the company invested into its workforce and capabilities, but it provides local WA businesses with an expert supplier in their own back yard.

Royal Caribbean Awards Handling Specialty its Largest Fixed Price Contract in 58-Year History

Hamilton, Ontario, Canada, 2021-Jul-05 — /EPR INDUSTRIAL NEWS/ — To have recently landed a project that can be identified as a company’s largest fixed price contract in its long history is reason enough to celebrate, but when it’s with a corporation who is intimately familiar with your work and company values, that validates an organization’s processes from sales and engineering to manufacturing, installation and service.

Handling Specialty made history in 1995 when it was contracted to produce the underwater stage lift system for Cirque du Soleil at the Bellagio, in Las Vegas. The ‘O’ show continues to perform 2 shows per night after 24 years on the original Handling Specialty lift systems. It is an extraordinary engineering feat from a world class SME located in the heart of Niagara, in Grimsby, Ontario.

Since that monumental moment for the company, several underwater stage lift systems have been designed, built and installed into multiple theatres including the City of Dreams theatre, which runs The House of Dancing Water show in Macau. This epic undertaking gained Handling Specialty a spot in the Guinness Book of World Records.

Handling Specialty is the world leader in underwater theatrical spectacles, and is installing systems all over the world. They are also flown to remote vacation locations to provide highly skilled technicians to repair or maintain these multi million-dollar systems efficiently to ensure that the show(s) go on.

This latest win for the company is the accumulation of an almost 20-year relationship designing and building for Royal Caribbean International. “This project began 2.5-years ago with technical sales and conceptual engineering leading the charge to win this prestigious venture,” says Tom Beach, President of Handling Specialty and the lead sales associate on this project. “We cherish our relationship with Royal Caribbean and with a revenue stream via new builds, service, and dry dock overhauls that will last over 10-plus-years, we understand what it takes to keep our customers happy.”

Handling Specialty’s turnkey solutions for Royal Caribbean includes conceptual engineering and contract settlements to full design including all electrical and hydraulic networks, custom stage flooring, installation, training, commissioning and on-going MRO.

“Experience goes a long way in winning a project as large as this,” Beach goes on to say. “Deploying professionals and skilled technicians to Finland over the next 6 years to install our equipment will be a challenge, but we’ve completed similar scenarios many times before.”

In March of 2021, Handling Specialty sent a team of technicians to Barbados where they quarantined on the Allure of the Seas for 14 days, one of the Oasis class of ships, and then performed planned maintenance on the ship’s underwater stage lift equipment. This same group of people went on to Spain where they completed similar work on Harmony of the Seas. Freighting the parts and flying people to these locations during a pandemic and successfully completing the work ahead of schedule is another nod to Handling Specialty’s abilities to organize massive projects and perform the work without interruption. It also speaks to the quality of the people working at Handling Specialty, and the lengths they will go to, to see a job through.

“Having worked together for almost 20 years on our Oasis class ships, I’m thrilled to be partnering with Handling Specialty again.” – Christopher Vlassopulos, Superintendent SLVR & Architectural Lighting for Royal Caribbean International & Celebrity Cruises, says.

The financial impact on the Niagara-based company is a welcome one. Entertainment industry builds have been scarce through the pandemic and to come out the other end with a project of this size is a boost to company moral and another nod to Handling Specialty’s impressive track record designing and building stage lift systems for the entertainment industry.

Beach says of the future, “I feel certain that Handling Specialty will continue our relationship with Royal Caribbean International and international ship yards for decades.”

Mixed Fortunes for Engineers and Their Colleagues

Results from Reed’s recent report ‘Meeting the People Challenge’ indicate that employers large and small have been seeking alternatives to redundancy, such as extended holidays and flexible working schemes. Whilst many engineering firms have been unable to avoid lay-offs, others have fared better and are now planning to hire. Mark Blay, Area Manager for Reed Engineering in St Albans, agrees that many of his clients have sought to avoid redundancies – but for many, it’s just not possible: ‘There have been more instances of unpaid leave; less so for reduced working hours,’ he says. ‘And of course, some companies regard the current situation as an opportunity to have a clear-out. But good candidates – people who in a different economic climate would have a choice of new roles – are still being released.’

Mixed Fortunes for Engineers and Their Colleagues

No choice

Amongst Reed Engineering’s clients, candidates in electrical and mechanical maintenance jobs have been in the firing line. ‘If order books are down, and production lines are not running at full capacity, there’s less plant to look after,’ says Blay. ‘Although building maintenance people have been less adversely affected.’ Many organisations are holding on to key senior people in readiness for a future surge in business. Yet companies with more complex hierarchies have been forced to strip out layers of management. According to Blay, business development and sales people in consulting firms have been hit hard: ‘Even though market forces are mostly to blame – rather than poor selling or account management skills – if business isn’t coming in, companies can’t afford to employ them.’

Engineering employers don’t appear to be stepping up with temporary recruitment, despite that being the case in other sectors. ‘It can appear unfair making redundancies and subsequently hiring temporary employees, but the temporaries regularly have varied skill sets, whilst enabling short-term flexibility, and can be released at a moment’s notice. Once order books improve and there is a more confident long-term outlook for the companies concerned, they may then revert to permanent hires.’

New Diagnostics Instrument for High Volume Semiconductor Manufacturing Environment

InnerSense Ltd., a leading global developer and manufacturer of precision auto-diagnostics instruments for the semiconductors industry, introduced a new system for eliminating handling-related yield loss in 300mm wafer process tools running high volume production.

The new system, coined SMW2, consists of a 300mm wafer instrumented with sensitive three dimensional vibration sensors, and a “Smart FOUP™” that serves as a recharge and communication station, as well as a clean storage container. The “Smart FOUP” employs contact-less recharging and data transfer that enable the system to interface with standard robotic wafer handlers and be operated with minimal interruption to the production line.

Yigal Tomer, InnerSense’s Co-CEO, commented, “The new system is based on six years of excursion control experience. Built on our successful Smart Wafer technology, it brings to the high volume production environment the monitoring ability that has enabled predictive maintenance and statistical analysis of tool condition, previously available in engineering mode only.”

In addition to 3D vibration sensing and FOUP-based, contact-less reader/recharger station, the SMW2 features advanced analytical tools that facilitate troubleshooting, SPC-based trend identification and tool-to-tool comparison. These tools allow even untrained operators to use the system effectively to enhance the availability of expensive wafer process equipment.

ABOUT “SMART WAFER” TECHNOLOGY
A semiconductor wafer is typically handled hundreds of times during its manufacturing process. Collisions and rubbing against other objects may result in edge cracks and back scratches. Uneven or abrupt lifting may cause skidding and misalignment, or even dropping the wafer inside the tool. Particles generated in mechanical contact cause contamination. In total, handling related defects are believed to cause over 30% of wafer yield loss.

Instrumented with sensitive multi-axial accelerometers, InnserSense’s Smart Wafer travels just like a production wafer through the entire path in the process tool and record the vibrations and tilting it experiences during the various handling operations. The recorded data is analyzed to pinpoint problem sources and detect mechanism deterioration to trigger predictive maintenance. By providing quantitative and statistical information on a regular basis, the Smart Wafer becomes a valuable tool for Advanced Equipment Control (AEC). The resulting enhanced yield and productivity translate to significant cost savings.

“As a center of the manufacturing belt, Chicago is a strategic city for us” explains Rolf H. Keidel, founder of the company. “The DrainStar® Siphonic Calculator helps American roof drain and pipe manufacturers precisely calculate a planned drainage network using their own product information and relevant data. However, it also adds value to the manufacturer’s products by providing the data and drawings for construction of the drainage network that their customers can use. The manufacturer becomes a system provider that offers solutions– not just a seller of drains and pipes. This adds great value to the manufacturer’s products and brand.”

The precision of the DrainStar Siphonic Calculator software also results in cost savings of about 30% on average because the exact drainage performance of the roof runoffs is calculated. The manufacturer easily enters any product information with other key figures about the planned drainage network, and the network plan appears on the computer screen, including all the needed components. The manufacturer decides whether to create bills of material with or without prices, while the data can be converted into estimates or tender offers instantly. The network drawing can easily be transferred to CAD. All country-specific variables can also be used.

“US companies who want to take advantage of government and other incentives for ‘green’ building projects will recognize the opportunities presented by calculating siphonic drainage networks,” adds Mr. Lenzhofer. “By using a siphonic design, LEED™ points are awarded, signifying energy efficient and environmentally friendly construction practices. These points can translate into increased profitability.”

The LEEDâ„¢ green building rating system encourages design and construction practices that increase profitability while reducing negative environmental impact on buildings. The environmental benefits of siphonic roof drainage are clear. Properly calculated siphonic drainage networks can result in reduced site disturbance and preparation, as well as a reduction in the use of construction materials. Pipe diameters are much smaller, the number of roof runoffs and downpipes is greatly reduced, and fewer ground lines need to be laid. These and other desired results are eligible for valuable LEED credits, and offer significant cost cutting for builders.

High-Speed, Reliable, And Affordable Metrology Solutions For Every Class Of Thin-Film Photovoltaic Material Used In Today’s Industry

Filmetrics announces the launch of its thin-film photovoltaic (TFPV) dedicated measurement systems. With the release of the F10-PV and the F37-PV Filmetrics now offers commercially available tabletop and in-line metrology solutions for industries utilizing all classes of TFPV materials.

Typically built on or under transparent conductive oxides (TCO) on glass, plastics, or metal substrates, the properties of TFPV films are notoriously difficult to measure due to their special optical properties. Filmetrics has SOLVED this problem for all classes of films used in today’s industry.

The Filmetrics F10-PV and F37-PV products are capable of monitoring the film thickness of active layers such as amorphous Si, CdS, CdTe, copper-indium gallium diselenide (CIGS), TCOs, and buffer layers. These types of devices are intentionally designed to absorb rather than reflect light creating many unique challenges for performing metrology on these layers. Surmounting these challenges the F10-PV and the F37-PV can accurately measure the thickness and optical properties of even the most complex structures on TCOs adding unrivalled value in terms of production quality, efficiency, and cost control for TFPV device manufacturers.

Strong market demand, and working closely with our existing TFPV customer base, led Filmetrics to undergo extensive collaborative research in the past months to develop these products. The addition of non-destructive thin-film thickness metrology to the TFPV environment is expected to greatly enhance production efficiency and yields, help develop new processes, and facilitate rapid transfer these new ideas to the production floor.

With years of experience in the thin-film measurement field, Filmetrics provides a simple-to-understand user interface and unparalleled support. Headquartered in San Diego, CA, Filmetrics has a full line of thin-film measurement systems and is continually developing new products and technologies that bring greater efficiency to thin-film metrology. Filmetrics was founded in 1995 and has quickly established itself as the foremost innovator in the thin-film measurement industry.

Hays Engineering Heralds Engineering Infrastructure Boost

The significant investment in the UK’s infrastructure continues to bolster demand for specialist engineering skills, according to the leading specialist recruitment consultancy, Hays Engineering. Those professionals who can demonstrate experience working on the railways, highways, bridges, in transport planning, or in environmental and drainage roles are all highly sought after by employers.

The upgrading of the rail infrastructure has bolstered demand for rail engineers: projects are varied and can encompass station design and refurbishment to resignalling and maintenance schemes. The Channel Tunnel Rail Link (CTRL) or High Speed 1 (HS1) link is a prominent example of major investment in the rail industry. “Rail, signal and electrification engineers are all keenly sought specialist skills. Roles for rail engineers exist at all levels of experience, from graduate and intermediate through to senior engineering jobs appointments,” said Sean Fitzgerald, senior consultant at Hays Engineering.

The recent spate of flooding that has wreaked havoc across parts of the UK has reinforced the need for land drainage and flood defence expertise, as local authorities and the Environment Agency work closely to mitigate the damaging effects of future flooding by conducting flood risk and alleviation studies. “The demand for land drainage engineers has spiralled and the recommendations from Sir Michael Pitt’s Flood Review final report (2008) have only added to the importance of these specialist roles,” stressed Grant Edwards, manager for Hays Engineering.

Transport planning and modelling expertise is another specialist area that is in demand, as the need for assessing the transport impact of developments, traffic and people flow in and around the UK’s major conurbations becomes ever greater. “Technical modelling skills and knowledge of industry simulation and traffic modelling packages, such Vissim, Vissum, Saturn and Transyt are all prized skill sets,” commented Katherine Whipps, Manager at Hays Engineering.

The assessment and inspection of bridge structures has also created opportunities for qualified structural bridge engineers and bridge inspectors to work on the UK’s canals and estuaries. “Knowledge of bridge design software and the BS5400 cod of practice are pre-requisites,” added Katherine Whipps.

While engineering recruitment has slowed in some sectors as the result of the economic downturn, continued investment in the UK’s infrastructure has not affected the demand for drainage, rail, highways, bridges, environmental and transport engineers. All roles require experience and typically knowledge of sector specific design packages but employers are also looking for individuals with excellent communication and people skills who can also demonstrate leadership potential.
