Don’t Get Out Of Line When Marking Out Your Workplace, warns Safetyshop

Marking out a workplace can be an incredibly important task for a significant number of businesses. Manufacturing plants, warehouses, car parks and factories all need obvious markings to help keep workers safe, and UK safety products manufacturer Safetyshop is calling on firms to get their line marking strategy straight.

• Prepare – Make sure the area you’ll be marking out is free of obstructions. You do not want to have to start moving objects once marking has begun.

• In order to ensure straight lines, always use a guide such as a length of tape, length of wood or a ladder.

Turn Up The Heat On Fire Procedures In Your Workplace

DESPITE new legislation being introduced last year to reinforce the fact that employers in England must consider an employee’s capabilities when it comes to fire safety, the majority are still unaware of their obligations according to workplace equipment provider Slingsby.

The Fire Safety (Employees’ Capabilities) (England) Regulations 2010 were introduced to clarify how fire-related tasks and assignments should be delegated to employees. As part of the legislation employers must consider what a worker is able and unable to do and how these capabilities may affect their ability to deal with fire-related risks.

Lee Wright, Marketing Director of Slingsby, which supplies 35,000 workplace products including an extensive range of fire safety equipment, explains: “Rather than being an extra burden for employers, these new regulations have been introduced to reinforce a workplace’s responsibilities under the Regulatory Reform (Fire Safety) Order 2005. However the majority of businesses that we speak to are still unaware of the requirements and, as well as creating health and safety issues, this could put them at risk of prosecution.

“The regulations say that employers must carry out a fire safety risk assessment to identify what general fire precautions need to be in place. This should be reviewed regularly and updated where necessary. It must take a workers’ capabilities into consideration along with specific risks they face in their job role and where necessary employers should provide specific training. This also applies to fire wardens or marshals.”

The Regulatory Reform (Fire Safety) Order 2005 is still the primary legislation concerning all sectors of fire safety. As part of this employers are required to carry out a fire risk assessment to identify potential hazards and then take action to reduce them. They must also have a plan in place in case of an emergency as well as nominated people to assist in implementing it and all employees should be aware of the procedures.

All buildings must have adequate escape routes for their size and layout. In addition relevant signage should display fire procedures and highlight exits. In premises where employees could be unaware of a fire, either because it’s out of sight or they can’t hear warnings from colleagues, suitable fire alarms should be used and emergency lighting may be necessary in dark escape routes.

Usually one water based extinguisher is also required for each 200m2 of floor space, with a minimum of one extinguisher per floor. However in large or more complex premises, and depending on individual risks, a greater number or wider range of fire safety equipment could be required and some premises may also require hose reels, fire blankets or protective clothing.

Take The Sun Seriously And Protect Your Workers, Says UK Safety Firm

With the summer months fast approaching, all parts of the UK are starting to enjoy some sunshine on a regular basis. Health and safety specialist Safetyshop has called on all companies that employ people to work outdoors to make sure they take steps to help protect their workers from the effects of sun exposure this summer. Due to Britain’s climate, providing staff with suitable sun protection is often not a high priority for most businesses, but prolonged exposure to the sun’s harmful ultraviolet rays is a serious problem.

Employers are responsible for their employees’ health and safety at work, and when it comes to protection from the sun there are a number of steps that can be taken. Getting workers to cover up and avoid exposure at lunchtime – the hottest part of the day – is a good start. Providing access to sun screen with a sun protection factor of at least 15, and encouraging employees to wear workwear such as hats are also positive moves.

• Get Management Support – Employees with ideas about introducing recycling bins and other waste management programs should get support from management who will be able to get on board and approve of the suggestions.
• Look for recyclable material in your company’s waste – Waste such as paper, cardboard, cans and bottles are a good starting point and are often the largest volume of waste material in businesses too.
• Find a local recycling company or recycling centre – knowing where to take the material to or who to come and collect your recyclable waste will be an important step.
• Decide where to place recycling containers – A good place to place recycling bins is where the waste is normally kept or generated, this makes it easy for workers to identify where to dispose of the recyclable waste.
• Educate and incentivise your co-workers – educate workers on what can and cannot be recycled and the location of the recycle bins. You may want to encourage them to recycle by offering incentives or rewards for teams or departments that recycle the most.
• Monitor and report – Management will want to know how much resources are saved as a result and chart the success of the scheme.

There are other areas which companies could require additional products such as hazardous substance storage and external bins such as recycling old batteries to prevent chemicals leaking as well as safely disposing of unwanted or old electrical equipment.

The Waste Electrical and Electronic Equipment (WEEE) regulations issued by the government have made it much easier to recycle old electrical equipment safely.

Businesses Urged To Act Over Car Park Safety

Firms across the UK have been urged to make sure their car parks and outside areas are not posing a danger to staff, customers or members of the public.

Safetyshop, one of the country’s leading safety products manufacturers, recommends that businesses carry out a full risk assessment to help ensure they are doing everything possible to minimise risk when it comes to outdoor premises.

The winter weather has resulted in surfaces on many public roads becoming uneven, with potholes appearing up and down the UK. The government announced in February that it will allocate an extra £100m to councils in England to help pay for road repairs – a reminder of just how seriously the authorities view the issue of poorly maintained road surfaces.

Unfortunately, businesses have also suffered at the hands of the winter weather and it is just as important that holes and uneven surfaces in private car parks and outdoor workplace areas are attended to. This can help improve car park security as well as safety. Companies have an obligation under The Workplace (Health, Safety and Welfare) Regulations 1992 to provide a safe environment and this includes maintaining the condition of traffic routes and floors and objects such as speed control ramps.

Point 12.2(a) of the act says: “The floor, or surface of the traffic route, shall have no hole or slope, or be uneven or slippery so as, in each case, to expose any person to a risk to his health or safety”.

Don’t Slip Up By Neglecting Floors

DESPITE slips and trips still being one of the most common causes of accidents in the workplace, many employers are unknowingly putting their employees at risk by not maintaining non-slip flooring correctly, according to a warning from workplace equipment provider, Slingsby.

The Health & Safety Executive (HSE) says at least one serious slip injury occurs every three minutes in workplaces throughout Great Britain and most of these are due to contaminants, such as water or grease.

Lee Wright, Marketing Director of Slingsby which supplies more than 35,000 workplace products across all industries from salt spreaders to air conditioners, explains: “Non-slip flooring is often found in high traffic areas such as kitchens and on walkways so it can quickly build up with dirt and grime if it is not cleaned regularly and as the HSE’s figures demonstrate this regularly results in accidents.

“Cleaning up any spillages or contaminations should be a priority in all organisations. Putting such procedures in place is quick and easy and can immediately make a workplace safer and reduce the risk of injuries and compensation claims.”

Lee adds: “In addition non-slip safety matting should be cleaned regularly to maintain its non-slip properties and in busy or public areas it should be cleaned every day. Because a lot of non-slip floors are heavily textured rap mops usually work better than sponge mops, which often disintegrate, and an industrial floor cleaning product should also be used. A scrub brush is good for tough areas or else steam cleaners are also very effective on these surfaces.

Environmentally Friendly Safety Signs Material Comes to Safetyshop

Polypropylene is 1.2mm thick, recyclable and hard wearing enough to be a suitable eco-friendly replacement to PVC, meaning that businesses will not need to buy replacements in just a few years time.

Look Out! ISO EN 7010 Comes Into Force at Safetyshop

Safetyshop, the UK’s market leader in safety products, has moved to reassure customers ahead of imminent changes to safety sign regulations.

In early 2011, the ISO 7010 standard will be officially updated as part of a move to harmonise safety signage across the whole of Europe, and Safetyshop has revised its catalogue of products in preparation.

ISO 7010 has been in force since late 2003, and covers safety signs used in workplaces and a variety of other locations where people need to be informed about safety matters. All of Safetyshop’s safety signs will comply to the latest ISO standards (Amendments 1-6) and the range will be updated throughout the year as more symbols are released by ISO. Signs for smoking, hard hats and fire assembly points are all covered by the new standard, and can be found in private buildings and public places across the UK.

Various amendments have been made to the standard in recent years and the latest will see a number of changes to signage in order to ensure consistency across Europe. Companies will notice some pictograms have only been very slightly altered to conform to the new rules, while other changes are far more noticeable. All changes however have been designed to make it simple for people of all European nationalities to instantly recognise important safety messages.

Static Control Ionizer Specifically Designed To Ionize Nitrogen Gas Flow In Pure Nitrogen Environments

ION Systems, an ITW Company, the leader in static charge neutralization and control products for high tech industries, announces the In-line Ultra Clean Nitrogen Ionizer, Model 4214, the first in-line ionizer specifically designed to ionize a nitrogen gas flow in ultra clean medical, semiconductor, or other high purity processes where static charge generation is an issue.

The Model 4214 In-line Ultra Clean Nitrogen Ionizer was developed to provide a solution to the problem of materials readily charging to 30-40 kV when handled in pure nitrogen environments. Many processes in the medical, semiconductor, and electronics industries are carried out in five 9’s pure nitrogen environments (99.999% nitrogen). Nitrogen ensures a clean, non-oxidizing environment that enables critical processes to be carried out without contamination issues. The dry nitrogen environment, however, encourages static charge generation, which can cause particles contamination through electrostatic attraction, or damage from ESD events. The Model 4214 ionizer, by providing a stream of ionized nitrogen, can effectively remove static charge from products to minimize particle attraction and ESD events. Nitrogen cannot be ionized with standard ionization equipment designed for use in ambient air or CDA environments. The Model 4214 provides the user with the first small format ionizer that ionizes the actual nitrogen molecules instead of the trace impurity gases.

In addition to ionizing pure nitrogen, the Model 4214 is also the world’s first corona ionizer that meets Extended ISO Class 1 cleanliness. Using formulas in the ISO 14644-1 standard, ION Systems has extrapolated the allowable particles down to 0.01 micron (10 nm) in size. These smaller particles which are not covered by ISO 14644-1 can be especially harmful to semiconductor devices with 32 nm or below technology nodes.
