Balli Steel, One Of The World’s Largest Privately Owned Independent Commodity Traders, Forecasts Economic Recovery In Five Phases

Balli Steel, one of the world’s largest privately owned independent commodity traders, has forecast that the global economic recovery will sequentially occur in five phases, with increased demand for steel in each sector acting as a barometer or indicator of such recovery.

balli

Balli Steel highlights that global annualised steel production this year is forecast to be 1.1 billion tonnes, down on last year’s record 1.3 billion tonnes, but significantly higher than the 800 million tonnes recorded in 2000.

Balli considers the steel markets of North America, Europe and the Gulf Co-operation Countries (GCC) the hardest hit by, not only the credit crisis, but by overstocking and speculation on future prices. Balli expects the market in the GCC economies to see a gradual improvement while North America and Europe will experience continued problems. Forecasts indicate that Japan and South Korea will also continue to face economic challenges since their industries are more dependent on Western Europe and North America.

Vahid Alaghband, Group Chairman of Balli Steel, said: “The credit crunch and global economic downturn has had a ‘Tsunami Effect’ covering all key economic sectors: steel and other commodities, property, automotive, capital goods and finance. At present steel producers are operating only at around 50-60% of their capacity. We consider the implementation of government driven stimulus packages, which will see significant public sector investment in civil engineering and infrastructure projects, will procure the first phase of the global economic recovery.”

Balli Steel considers that the second phase will be characterised by a gradual recovery of the housing market that is expected to begin in Q4 2009, and which will be led by key cities such as London, New York, Singapore and Hong Kong.

Vahid Alaghband observed: “With prices down by up to 40% in certain markets, overnight interest rates at the near zero level, and yields at up to 10%, property has become a good long term investment again. With supply at a record low we expect the market to grow steadily through to beginning 2010 and well into 2014. The return to the market of competitive mortgages will prove a further boost.”

Phase three of the recovery will be characterised by increased demand for products that rely on unsecured loans and consumer-credit. Balli Steel calculates that the retail, white goods and automotive industry will begin to see a return to recovery to begin around Q2 2010.

Balli also expects a recovery of the global shipbuilding industry, providing a major boost to steel traders, in the first quarter of 2011, marking the return to more normal international trading patterns and leading the fourth phase of the global recovery. The fifth phase will be a return to more normal investment in capital goods by producers as they gain confidence in the state of the world economy.

“We are by no means out of the woods yet and there is a lot of pain ahead of us in 2009 and 2010. But in the last few weeks as I speak to business counterparts the general consensus appears to be that we are no longer in a state of uncontrolled free-fall and we are at or close to the bottom in a number of markets”, said Vahid Alaghband.

According to Conrad Bailey, spokesperson for MFGmatch.net, the site is designed to help domestic and international machine shops promote their services online while enabling those in the market for custom manufacturing services to submit RFQ’s (request for quotes) directly to national and international manufacturers at . Bailey said the focus of the site is on machined parts, precision components and other custom products constructed in various metals, plastics, rubber, wood and other materials.

“MFGmatch.net was designed to include offerings for all types of services provided by machine shops such as castings, engineering and design, fabrication, forging, woodworking, tool and die making, prototyping, plastic and rubber parts, molding, mold making, metal finishing, precision machining, heat treatment, forging and other custom manufacturing solutions,” said Bailey. He added, “Industrial Leaders created the site because research has shown many smaller shops are in need of a lead generation service they can afford and compete with larger manufacturers that often dominate search engines and other industrial marketplaces on the Web.”

Bailey said there are existing site that charge machine shops as much as $5,000 and up annually for the privilege to access RFQ’s with no guarantee of results in terms of new customers. MFGmatch.net on the other hand is free for both the buyer as well as the supplier. He explained, “It’s a win-win situation for everybody involved because the money saved by the machine shop that would usually be spent on advertising can be passed on to the buyer.”

Leading Developer Of Individualized Solutions For Siphonic Roof Drainage Chooses Chicago Representative As First US Presence In The All Important Manufacturing Belt

After many successful years developing and distributing individual software solutions to plumbing manufacturers around the world, German-based Keidel Software announces a new US agent, Johannes Lenzhofer, Chicago, Illinois. Mr. Lenzhofer has a wide network of contacts, as well as years of experience representing German companies in the US.

“As a center of the manufacturing belt, Chicago is a strategic city for us” explains Rolf H. Keidel, founder of the company. “The DrainStar® Siphonic Calculator helps American roof drain and pipe manufacturers precisely calculate a planned drainage network using their own product information and relevant data. However, it also adds value to the manufacturer’s products by providing the data and drawings for construction of the drainage network that their customers can use. The manufacturer becomes a system provider that offers solutions– not just a seller of drains and pipes. This adds great value to the manufacturer’s products and brand.”

The precision of the DrainStar Siphonic Calculator software also results in cost savings of about 30% on average because the exact drainage performance of the roof runoffs is calculated. The manufacturer easily enters any product information with other key figures about the planned drainage network, and the network plan appears on the computer screen, including all the needed components. The manufacturer decides whether to create bills of material with or without prices, while the data can be converted into estimates or tender offers instantly. The network drawing can easily be transferred to CAD. All country-specific variables can also be used.

“US companies who want to take advantage of government and other incentives for ‘green’ building projects will recognize the opportunities presented by calculating siphonic drainage networks,” adds Mr. Lenzhofer. “By using a siphonic design, LEED™ points are awarded, signifying energy efficient and environmentally friendly construction practices. These points can translate into increased profitability.”

The LEEDâ„¢ green building rating system encourages design and construction practices that increase profitability while reducing negative environmental impact on buildings. The environmental benefits of siphonic roof drainage are clear. Properly calculated siphonic drainage networks can result in reduced site disturbance and preparation, as well as a reduction in the use of construction materials. Pipe diameters are much smaller, the number of roof runoffs and downpipes is greatly reduced, and fewer ground lines need to be laid. These and other desired results are eligible for valuable LEED credits, and offer significant cost cutting for builders.

High-Speed, Reliable, And Affordable Metrology Solutions For Every Class Of Thin-Film Photovoltaic Material Used In Today’s Industry

Filmetrics announces the launch of its thin-film photovoltaic (TFPV) dedicated measurement systems. With the release of the F10-PV and the F37-PV Filmetrics now offers commercially available tabletop and in-line metrology solutions for industries utilizing all classes of TFPV materials.

Typically built on or under transparent conductive oxides (TCO) on glass, plastics, or metal substrates, the properties of TFPV films are notoriously difficult to measure due to their special optical properties. Filmetrics has SOLVED this problem for all classes of films used in today’s industry.

The Filmetrics F10-PV and F37-PV products are capable of monitoring the film thickness of active layers such as amorphous Si, CdS, CdTe, copper-indium gallium diselenide (CIGS), TCOs, and buffer layers. These types of devices are intentionally designed to absorb rather than reflect light creating many unique challenges for performing metrology on these layers. Surmounting these challenges the F10-PV and the F37-PV can accurately measure the thickness and optical properties of even the most complex structures on TCOs adding unrivalled value in terms of production quality, efficiency, and cost control for TFPV device manufacturers.

Strong market demand, and working closely with our existing TFPV customer base, led Filmetrics to undergo extensive collaborative research in the past months to develop these products. The addition of non-destructive thin-film thickness metrology to the TFPV environment is expected to greatly enhance production efficiency and yields, help develop new processes, and facilitate rapid transfer these new ideas to the production floor.

With years of experience in the thin-film measurement field, Filmetrics provides a simple-to-understand user interface and unparalleled support. International Steel Returns To Normal Trading Levels Reports Balli Group

Balli Group Chairman, Vahid Alaghband, reports international steel market bottoms out and returns to normal trading levels.

Vahid Alaghband, Group Chairman of Balli Group, one of the world’s largest privately owned independent commodity traders, has stated that he believes the indications are that the international steel market has now bottomed out and is once again experiencing a normal trading environment, albeit at reduced volumes.

The return to regular steel trading confirms that the market has now recovered from the state of paralysis it found itself in last year.

Vahid Alaghband commented: “The international steel trading market is no longer frozen and we expect further stabilisation over the next 6-12 months. The return of normal trading and the relative stability of prices is an important milestone in the recovery of the construction industry and for the global economy.”

Nasser Alaghband, director at Balli Steel, added: “The bottoming out of the market for steel follows a cut in capacity by producers in response to the global downturn in construction and the seasonal fall in demand for the northern hemisphere. The growth of the steel futures markets for construction steel in London and Dubai since 2007 has helped increase price transparency and has enabled decision making on capital investment.”

Major steel consumers – property developers, construction firms and ship builders – welcomed the growth of the futures market for steel as it provides them with a means of controlling risk by enabling users and suppliers to lock in prices and avoid losses.

Balli Steel experienced good trading levels in Q4 (2008) and expects Q1 to be slower, partially due to seasonal variations in the market. Near normal market conditions are predicted for the second half of the year.

Nasser Alaghband observed: “The market became incredibly difficult and almost non-existent early in 2008 as demand, principally from the construction industry evaporated in response to the global financial crisis. The situation eased during the third quarter and by Q4 the market began to trade again in a normal fashion.”

“One major obstacle to European trade is the loss of access to credit insurance as insurers such as Euler Hermes and Atradius re-evaluate their exposures in deteriorating economic conditions”, Nasser concluded.

About Balli Group plc

The Channel Tunnel Rail Link (CTRL) or High Speed 1 (HS1) link is a prominent example of major investment in the rail industry. “Rail, signal and electrification engineers are all keenly sought specialist skills. Roles for rail engineers exist at all levels of experience, from graduate and intermediate through to senior engineering jobs appointments,” said Sean Fitzgerald, senior consultant at Hays Engineering.

The recent spate of flooding that has wreaked havoc across parts of the UK has reinforced the need for land drainage and flood defence expertise, as local authorities and the Environment Agency work closely to mitigate the damaging effects of future flooding by conducting flood risk and alleviation studies. “The demand for land drainage engineers has spiralled and the recommendations from Sir Michael Pitt’s Flood Review final report (2008) have only added to the importance of these specialist roles,” stressed Grant Edwards, manager for Hays Engineering.

Transport planning and modelling expertise is another specialist area that is in demand, as the need for assessing the transport impact of developments, traffic and people flow in and around the UK’s major conurbations becomes ever greater. “Technical modelling skills and knowledge of industry simulation and traffic modelling packages, such Vissim, Vissum, Saturn and Transyt are all prized skill sets,” commented Katherine Whipps, Manager at Hays Engineering.

The assessment and inspection of bridge structures has also created opportunities for qualified structural bridge engineers and bridge inspectors to work on the UK’s canals and estuaries. “Knowledge of bridge design software and the BS5400 cod of practice are pre-requisites,” added Katherine Whipps.

While engineering recruitment has slowed in some sectors as the result of the economic downturn, continued investment in the UK’s infrastructure has not affected the demand for drainage, rail, highways, bridges, environmental and transport engineers. All roles require experience and typically knowledge of sector specific design packages but employers are also looking for individuals with excellent communication and people skills who can also demonstrate leadership potential.

Jungheinrich Lift Truck Corp. has reached an agreement with Equipment Depot of Ohio to further expand its dealership network in North America

Jungheinrich will complete a sale of assets and the virtual relocation of its factory store in Cincinnati to Equipment Depot of Ohio around March 1, 2009. The restructuring and transition to Equipment Depot of Ohio is a very significant and positive step for Jungheinrich’s business growth in this region, as this agreement allows Jungheinrich to extend its reach to many more potential customers, and provides opportunities for further expansion in the Northeast.

Equipment Depot’s dealer network in North America has achieved over $400 million in sales and employs 1,750 personnel. The network consists of five regional equipment dealers with 40 locations in 12 states, including the former Portman Equipment Company, recently renamed Equipment Depot of Ohio. The overall network locations span f r o m the Midwest to the Northeast, as well as a South Central region.

Equipment Depot is owned by the Pon family and is one of the world’s largest family-owned businesses. Ed Neyer, President and CEO of Equipment Depot, stated “Jungheinrich is truly a premier lift truck brand which now provides our customers with a broad selection of quality order pickers, reach trucks and other lift trucks for their warehousing needs. Their feature-rich line of turret trucks will be an exciting addition to our systems group, and will boost our ability to help customers optimize the flow of material in their warehouses and distribution centers. We welcome Jungheinrich to our successful organization and expect them to be a significant contributor to our continued growth.” Neyer also pledged to maintain the ‘local intimacy’ that has become the hallmark of the Pon family’s success as they sell and service Jungheinrich lift truck vehicles for customers.

John Sneddon, President of Jungheinrich Lift Truck Corp., also stated “We are very excited about this move because the business opportunities are far greater with Equipment Depot than any other alternative approach we considered – including retaining our Cincinnati factory store. We have a very optimistic and positive outlook for the near future as we effect this transition over the next month or so.” Sneddon also indicated that “a number of the key Jungheinrich Cincinnati factory store staff will be transferring to Equipment Depot.”

All current customer contracts and agreements with the Jungheinrich factory store, including rental contracts, will be transferred and supported by Equipment Depot.

Electric Reach Trucks Offer Substantial Advantages Over Pantograph Trucks

If you’re a company that currently operates pantograph reach trucks, you’re likely seeking higher residual capacities at high lift heights in narrow aisles, as well as fewer repairs to the load wheels and the reach mechanisms on your vehicles. If so, the ETM/ETV 214/216 mast-moving AC reach trucks f r o m Jungheinrich Lift Truck Corp. are an excellent solution for you.

The increased load capacity and lift height of these trucks is a direct result of their design function, which inserts and removes loads by moving their masts rather than extending or retracting their forks via a pantograph mechanism. “The absence of a pantograph contributes greatly to improved operator confidence and productivity, since the view afforded the operator through the mast and fork carriage is much better, and the fork tips are easier to see,” adds Greg Mason, General Manager of Products and Training at Jungheinrich.

The ETVs differ f r o m  the ETMs in having more widely spaced outriggers (also called base-legs). Both models offer a choice of mast tilt, but the wider ETV is also available with fork tilt above certain lift heights. In addition, both chassis are available with patented mast-reach cushioning, which means the reaching and retracting of the mast assembly is smooth and precise. Integrated side-shifters are a standard feature on the trucks.

“Another way the ETM/ETV trucks differ f r o m pantograph designs is that the operator sits down to drive the vehicle. This configuration is ergonomically preferable in operations where the operator stays on the truck for long periods of time rather than constantly getting on and off,” states Greg Mason. The operator compartment has a low entry height, and the seat, armrest, and steering wheel are all adjustable. The trucks’ centrally-located MULTI-PILOT control lever activates all hydraulic functions, as well as travel direction and the horn. The controls are organized in a logical, highly visible manner, providing greater efficiency via the potential for simultaneous use of two hydraulic functions (e.g., lifting and reaching). The operator display is also centrally-positioned, and clearly shows both operational and safety-related data. It allows various travel programs to be selected or adjusted at the touch of a button.

Since the load wheels on these mast-moving reach trucks have a large diameter, they can negotiate rough floor surfaces better than those on most pantograph models. This means a longer tire life due to less wear, and reduced potential for damage – as well as a smoother ride. And the Curve Control program on the ETM/ETV trucks automatically reduces travel speed when cornering for added stability. This type of speed reduction is not typically found on pantograph-style reach trucks.

Jungheinrich’s proprietary 3-phase AC technology, present in the trucks’ drive, lift and steering systems, offers users higher efficiency and longer operating times per battery charge. Less maintenance, or downtime, is the result of the absence of carbon brushes, brush springs or commutators in the AC motors. Another key operational benefit of AC technology is that it leads to powerful acceleration and quick directional changes without hesitation. Energy reclamation during braking is a standard feature on the trucks, and energy reclamation during load lowering is an option.

For more information about these reach trucks, contact Jungheinrich Lift Truck Corp., 5601 Eastport Boulevard, Richmond, VA 23231. Call: 804-737-7400. Fax: 804-737-7467, or, visit the website at jungheinrich-us.com.

Online technology resource now available for automation integrators looking for information on how to use and integrate OPC technology into their manufacturing process

The OPC Training Institute (OPCTI) recently launched an online resource center focused on standards-based OPC technology used in process control and manufacturing automation. The center caters to automation personnel, integrators, process control engineers, IT architects and others involved in industrial data connectivity.

The purpose of the online center is to support those who want to use and integrate OPC Technology. The online center offers a breadth of free OPC resources including multimedia tutorials, whitepapers, product reviews, webcasts and software downloads.

The resource center can be found on the OPC Training Institute website at www.opcti.com.

What differentiates the OPCTI resource center from others is the focus on technology integration – not technology development. OPCTI is the only vendor-neutral company that offers information for integrators. Other similar organizations tend to focus primarily on the programming and development of OPC applications or the sale of OPC products. OPCTI does not develop or sell products, which leaves them to focus 100% on education and the integration of OPC technology.

“There is something for everyone,” says Randy Kondor, founder of the OPC Training Institute. “Whether you’re new to OPC and are looking for an introduction, or are an experienced integrator faced with a specific error message, our goal is to provide answers.”

Kondor goes on to say, “much of the content is provided by OPCTI’s professional instructors. We also work with OPC vendors to find out about their individual offerings and refer people to their technology solutions. For example, if you’re looking for a specific software application, we’ll tell you what is available on the market and provide you with a link to instantly download the product to test it out. Our resource center grows daily.”

Since its inception in 1996, OPC has grown and is used extensively throughout the world today. As OPC gains in popularity, so does the demand from integrators for information. OPCTI offers resources covering many aspects of OPC technology including security, DCOM configuration, sharing data between control systems, troubleshooting and industry best practices.

About OPC Technology
OPC technology is the fastest growing industrial connectivity standard among automation professionals with well over 15,000 available OPC applications supported by over 3,000 companies. OPC is a global industrial connectivity standard that enables process control and manufacturing applications to communicate with each other using an interoperable, reliable and secure connection. OPC enables manufacturing environments to host a multitude of applications created by a variety of vendors.

About the OPC Training Institute
OPCTI is a global OPC training company with workshops in the Americas, Europe, and Asia-Pacific. Unlike other companies that offer vendor-biased information, OPCTI focuses strictly on training and does not sell its own products. OPCTI is the only company endorsed by OPC Foundation member companies to award the Certified OPC Professional (COP) designation.
